In many places one can specify a gradient along with the starting and ending color. It would be very useful to be able to be able to control the rate at which the gradient changes. For example using the plot background color gradient could be used to indicate zones of acceptable or unacceptable values fading from white to red; but you only want the red to intensify starting at 80% on the axis value. Being able to associate a color step intensity with an axis value would be the best solution; however just being able to specify a speed of the gradient would allow the user to play around until things lined up acceptably.
