I20110128-2000 - Eclipse window is maximized - Open a single editor - Click and drag the editor tab to try and detach it. Now to detach an editor, it has to be dragged outside the Eclipse window. It cannot be dropped on an empty area inside eclipse, i.e. the small bits of real estate surrounding the editors and views. - Since Eclipse window was maximized, I dragged it towards the bottom of the screen and dropped it on the task bar => poof, the editor vanishes (hides beneath the task bar) The only way I could bring back the editor was by resetting the perspective. Possible solutions - Each detached editor appears as a separate window on the task bar, and it should be possible to Alt+Tab to it. - It should not be necessary to drag the editor outside the Eclipse window to detach it. Browser tabs can be detached without dragging them outside the browser window.
On Windows 7, the detached window doesn't seem to go behind the taskbar as I can see it on top.
(In reply to comment #0) > The only way I could bring back the editor was by resetting the perspective. This doesn't work for me. I can open an editor on said file again but the act of resetting the perspective does not retroactively bring the detached editor (located behind the taskbar) back into the shared area.

Exact steps - Detach editor - Reset perspective - Open the same editor again => editor comes back to shared area
(In reply to comment #3) > Exact steps > - Detach editor > - Reset perspective > - Open the same editor again => editor comes back to shared area This is the expected behaviour. I thought you meant: 1. Detach the editor. 2. Reset the perspective. 3. The editor is back in the shared area.

Resetting your perspective will bring it back. The other solution is to activate the view (using Ctrl+3 for instance) and then use Alt+- to access its system menu and ask to move it.
I have observed the exact same issue as recently as Version: Kepler Service Release 2 Build id: 20140224-0627 The solution is identical; reset the perspective (I hadn't known how to solve the issue until I found this old bug). However, this issue manifests itself in a more insidious way. - open two editors (tabbed) - drag one editor to attempt to position side by side - there is a brief moment when the drop calculation has two resolved areas (manifested by two overlapping sets of green boxes) If you accidentally release the window at that moment the window is lost. You can view the listing the editor in the editor switcher (Shift-Ctrl-e) where you can close the editor but further attempts to open the same file will result in using the lost editor. You have to reset the perspective to clear up the issue. It's not easy to reproduce, I tried to deliberately do it many times and could not. However, this issue happens about once a month and it's annoying.
This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet. If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant. -- The automated Eclipse Genie.
