Nearly four years ago, an Eclipse-hosted blogging service was requested (see bug 179857) and set up. The original premise was to allow committers to blog under the umbrella of the EPL and the Eclipse.org's site Terms of Usage. In reality, none of the original requesters actually use the Eclipse blogging service. blogs.eclipse.org only has 66 blogs, while a large number of them are several years stale. Since blogs.eclipse.org is in dire need of an upgrade and a fresh, modern theme, I can't help but think my time would be better spent supporting infrastructure that committers actually use. Therefore, by way of this bug I am proposing we deprecate, and ultimately delete blogs.eclipse.org. I will contact all the owners of a blog on blogs.eclipse.org and point them to this bug.

OK with me!
+1. I've been using blogs.eclipse.org for my blog to support the team, but I prefer the functionality and widgets available on WordPress and Blogger. Now I can move without guilt :)
+1, if you can provide some instructions on how to move and where a good place to move is that would be great!
OK with me, as long as you keep a read-only copy of the blog online as long as possible, as I think it helped the project and can continue help people discover about it.
I just moved my blog to WordPress in about five minutes (of course, I've spent the last 20 minutes tweaking the theme). It's pretty easy: export your blog from blogs.eclipse.org and import into Wordpress.
Denis, does it make sense to try and set up redirects?
+1 To make blogs.eclipse.org more attractive more bells and whistles would be needed (at least: syntax highlighting imho). I agree that webmaster time is better invested on other tasks. If you close this feel free to also close bug 301333 :)
+1 for termination, esp. since we already have Eclipse Planet as a committer/contributor blog aggregator. +0 for readonly archiving. It's prolly useful for some blogs and less so for others. Most of mine, for example, is also on divbyzero.com so very little would be left if I scrubbed out the dupe entries. -- Alternatively (if this isn't already being done) might the portal host committers' blog or homepage URLs? That way, regardless of hosting service, you could always find someone's site from an eclipse.org query. Or is that redundant to what's already available from Eclipse Planet and teh googles?
fine by me. I've consolidated my blogging at mcaffer.com
(In reply to comment #5) > +1, if you can provide some instructions on how to move and where a good place > to move is that would be great! Francis, FWIW I am planning on moving to Wordpress.
Fine by me.
+1 I've moved the GEF3D blog to blogger. For others interested in that, I've found a nice tool for importing Wordpress blogs to Blogger: http://wordpress2blogger.appspot.com/
+1 for the termination.
(In reply to comment #5) > +1, if you can provide some instructions on how to move and where a good place > to move is that would be great! Our Wordpress install has an Export facility, which exports your entire blog, comments and all, to an XML file for import into other blogging sites. (In reply to comment #6) > OK with me, as long as you keep a read-only copy of the blog online I won't keep a copy since you can export the entire thing to XML and transform it to HTML using various tools out there. You can then host the HTML files somewhere in your project space. (In reply to comment #8) > Denis, does it make sense to try and set up redirects? I sure can. I can redirect dev.eclipse.org/blogs/(your_blog)/* to the "home page" of your new blog.
For those folks who move, if you want your PlanetEclipse subscription updated, please file a request against Community/PlanetEclipse and one of the PE admins will help you out.

As part of the import process, it even pulled over the images I had embedded in the blog. Pretty painless.
I wanted to express my thanks to Denis (and the Eclipse Foundation) for giving this a try. It was definitely worth a try. (And, I agree, apparently no great loss that it didn't work out). Thanks to all,
FWIW, my blog has been moved and I've asked to have the new blog aggregated on Planet Eclipse. When you get around to setting up those redirects, can you point http://dev.eclipse.org/blogs/wayne to http://waynebeaton.wordpress.com ? Thanks.
+1 I use Eclipse Blogs to automatically populate just my Eclipse related posts, so no problem. It would be nice though to redirect + update Eclipse Planet subscription automatically.
If it's the right forum - please redirect and update my subscription: http://dev.eclipse.org/blogs/seva/ -> http://sevalapsha.wordpress.com/category/development/eclipse/
(In reply to comment #25) > If it's the right forum - please redirect and update my subscription: > > http://dev.eclipse.org/blogs/seva/ -> > http://sevalapsha.wordpress.com/category/development/eclipse/ Put your move request in a new bug under the "PlanetEclipse.org" component.
+1 I have already moved by blog. Thanks for providing this facility in the past!
Could you redirect http://dev.eclipse.org/blogs/jeff to http://mcaffer.com Thanks
I've moved my blog back to my old Blogger account http://eclipsewebmaster.blogspot.com/ Let's go with an April 1st deadline. I'll set up some redirects shortly for those who have already moved.
Here are the redirects I have so far: ^/blogs/eclipsewebmaster http://eclipsewebmaster.blogspot.com/ [R=301,L] ^/blogs/jeff http://mcaffer.com/ [R=301,L] ^/blogs/seva http://sevalapsha.wordpress.com/category/development/eclipse/ [R=301,L] ^/blogs/wayne http://waynebeaton.wordpress.com/ [R=301,L] Am I missing any?
(In reply to comment #30) > Am I missing any? ^/blogs/gef3d http://gef3d.blogspot.com/ Cheers, Jens

Denis, Can you please add a redirect for my blog as well? http://dev.eclipse.org/blogs/mike to http://mmilinkov.wordpress.com ? Thanks!
If we're still doing redirects, I have moved the content from: http://dev.eclipse.org/blogs/mcqjustmcq/ to: http://themcq.wordpress.com/ (and yes, I know I don't update it often enough.)
FYI. Here is a list of active planet subscriptions which still points to blogs at dev.eclipse.org. If you blog is listed and you want your subscription alive after Eclipse blogs termination please open a bug against PlanetEclipse with your old and your new feed url. Thanks! (In reply to comment #29) > Let's go with an April 1st deadline. Are we still okay with an April 1st deadline? The redirects would be preserved after that date.
I hope it is still possible for a last minute redirection: http://dev.eclipse.org/blogs/raev/ --> http://kaloyanraev.blogspot.com/ Thanks!
And one more redirection please: http://dev.eclipse.org/blogs/francis/ --> http://francisu.wordpress.com/
Please, one more... http://dev.eclipse.org/blogs/memoryanalyzer/ -> http://memoryanalyzer.blogspot.com/ Thanks in advance!
I've added those three redirects.
Goodbye, Eclipse Blogs. You have served us well.
