I would like to be able to "close" a query in the task list so that tasks which are contained _only_ in that query will not show up in the task list (neither in the categorized nor the scheduled presentations). This would be analagous to closing a project in the package explorer. The effect would be similar to creating a working set which contains all resources and all queries except the closed query, but it would be much simpler to do, would not require editing the working set when new resources and queries are created, and it would allow the open/closed state of a query to crosscut working sets.

This would be useful to me because I have a query which contains a lot of tasks and which is not relevant to me most of the time, and I would like it's tasks not to show up (particularly in the scheduled presentation) regardless of whether I have any working sets activated.

This sound similar to the support for hidden queries which was added in Mylyn 3.5. Does that work for you?

Yes, the support for hidden queries is perfect for the use case I described!
