mod_pagespeed looks like it could be useful for increasing the performance of pages served, as long as they're not marked 'no-cache' (which it doesn't process). I wondered if it might be useful here?

We don't really have a need for this.  We mod_deflate everything, and some offline tests lead me to conclude this wouldn't save us much.
