Single sign-on systems provide a centralized mechanism for authentication through a variety of technologies. While it is unlikely that all of them can be supported in the framework it would be nice to have support for the most common ones. Additionally, an extensible authentication mechanism could provide hooks for adding support for other systems in the future.
