Build Identifier: Eclipse Java EE IDE for Web Developers. Version: Helios Service Release 1 Build id: 20100917-0705 I installed Eclipse and then tried to check for updated. It complained that there were no update sites configured and allowed me to add a site. However, it was not obvious where to go so I searched Google and came up with http://update.eclipse.org/updates/ but that was incorrect. Then I found http://wiki.eclipse.org/Eclipse_Project_Update_Sites and tried http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/updates/3.6 but this does not seem to find any updates. There indeed may not be any new updates there, but that does not confirm that I have entered the correct update site. Overall this is a very unsatisfactory user experience. Earlier versions of Eclipse IDE seemed to be preconfigured with the update site and automatic updates just seemed to work. What has changed and why is so frustrating now? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install Eclipse 2. From the Help menu select Check for Updates 3. Try to figure out what to do next and verify you have done the right thing

Do you have this problem with the Eclipse SDK? http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.6.1-201009090800/index.php Where did you unzip Eclipse to? Do other people you know have the same problem? What do you actually see when you go 'Window > Preferences > Install/Update > Available Software Sites'?
That's strange, eclipse-jee-helios-SR1-win32.zip, on a new workspace, has the sites for Helios, Mylyn, WTP, and the Eclipse project itself.
I installed (unzipped) Eclipse to c:\Program Files\Eclipse EE 3.6.1 I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 Professional. Right after installing Eclipse, when I went to 'Window > Preferences > Install/Update > Available Software Sites' it was empty - there were no sites listed. So I tried adding sites. Now it's populated with lots of sites. This seems to have happened magically without my intervention. Does Eclipse have to search for the sites on the network? Does this mean there is some lag between running Eclipse for the first time and when it goes and finds the sites? Did something else happen for it to find all those sites? The only thing special I did was install the Scala plugin, and add the site for that. Either way it was a frustrating experience that made no sense.
(In reply to comment #3) > I installed (unzipped) Eclipse to c:\Program Files\Eclipse EE 3.6.1 Since you played it in "Program Files", it may be a manifestation of bug 249133.
