According to the javadocs for @XmlAnyElement, it may be used with @XmlElementRef(s).

http://download.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/javax/xml/bind/annotation/XmlAnyElement.html

The oxm XML metadata does not support this cross-use, as xml-any-element has no xml-element-ref elements and xml-element-ref(s) has no xml-any-element tag.
