See Bug 321084. Currently, an EDC adopter cannot alter the launch steps other than by forking a good amount of code. A solution for dsf-gdb was debated at great length by a number of committers, and I think it's probably a safe bet to assume the solution there is a good one, and one we can adopt in EDC.

Never mind. On closer inspection, I see that EDC does provide the flexibility I need.
