Description David Williams CLA 2010-08-27 23:45:14 EDT
By chance, I noticed there is a directory under /tmp, named .com_ibm_tools_attach which has _me_ as owner ... but a bunch of files in it, that I don't own, and which I can't remove.

I did find an explanation for this directory at
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21407964

I assume I was the first to run Java after the new OS came up (or something) so I "own" the directory ... and everyone else just writes in it.

I don't know if this directory hurts anything ... seems kind of large, but not so much that its obviously hurting anything ... but seems it should be removed or cleaned up from time to time? But, I can't do it, since contents have restrictive permissions.

I suspect no one uses this "remote attach" capability, and we could turn it off by default ... but, I don't know enough about it to say for sure (and would have to research how to do that "globally").

I mostly wanted to call this to your attention, and document the URL that explains it. Feel free to close as 'won't fix' if this is a trivial matter, common for linux /tmp directory use, and needs no attention.

I've given up trying to figure out what Java does on a server.

In any case, we have a script to clean up /tmp files and directories older than 14 days. I just checked, and your .com_ibm_tools_attach directory is no longer there today.

I'll close this as WORKSFORME ...
