Description Wim Jongman CLA 2010-08-16 11:13:43 EDT
I would like to discuss the pricing for the following cases:

Students do not get any discount at all. A lot of work is done by students and I wonder how many additional people we could attract if we gave the students a big discount on entrance fees.
Long talks and tutorials only discount one person. I would like to see that increased to two persons, at least in the case of a 4 hour tutorial.
How about giving project leads a bigger discount than the current 15%. I would say that we should get as much project leads to the conference as possible.

Hello Wim,

Thanks for your comments.

We do offer a limited number of student discounts for ESE. The website registration page has a link on it for students to email us to ask about a student discount.
http://www.eclipsecon.org/summiteurope2010/registration/?page=registration

We have to operate our conferences within a certain budget. The budget determines how many discounts we can afford to have, including speaker discounts. Once we determine how many free passes we can give out, it's generally up to the program committee to determine how they would like to allocate the passes. As an example, the ESE program committee could have chosen to allocate two free passes for each tutorial and to give 25% off to each short talk speaker. Instead, they chose a different allocation.

Even though we don't provide a specific discount for project leads, many people in this role attend and do get a substantial discount because they are chosen to be presenters. The program committee actively recruits submissions from the most interesting projects.

Hi Wayne,

I know that budgets these days are tight so any discount is appreciated. But €250/$350USD for a three day event (not including travel + accommodations) is a still a lot of money for a student without a regular income.
For EclipseCon there is usually a "work for a ticket" program. Why is there no such program for European students at ESE?

And if the EF cannot do anything about discounts in the future, maybe it can do something about the setting in which the conference is held. E.g. it's 120€ per night for the Nestor hotel and Ludwigsburg does not offer many cheaper alternatives (same is true for EclipseCon).
Also it's expensive to get a budget flight to a tiny airport like Stuttgart. So if the conference would be held in a major town like Berlin/Paris/... students would have a much better chance of catching an affordable flight, find a couch to sleep on, ...

Jumping in here...

Markus, for EclipseCon 2011 we plan to have some free student passes for students who assist the tutorial presenters. This may not benefit you if you aren't planning on attending ECon, but at least we are trying. :-) We didn't offer this for ECon 2010 because we didn't have work for students. We offer the
"work for a pass" option only when we actually have work.

We don't have any work for students at ESE, and the attendance isn't large enough to provide the extra income for free student passes. We do the best we can by giving students a price that covers their food costs.

Moving the conference to a large city would mean raising conference fees by a significant amount, so that's not currently an option.

Catering is usually exceptional and food is plenty. But for students who try to save money, a non-food ticket might be of interest.

Because of rent for the venue?

That's an interesting suggestion, but at a venue like the Forum there is no way to implement that.

All the costs are higher in a larger city, especially the venue charges.
