This was reported to me by Benjamin:

Apparently the status line causes a full UI refresh every second for the clock. This is about 600k of data per second. This causes very high CPU utilization on RAP. It can be observed with firebug.

I think we could propably get rid of the clock. If we really need it we should refresh once every 60 seconds. It would also be interesting to findout why there is a full fresh instead of just the string for the time.
