screenshot showing problem

Win7, 20100523.

It's possible to shrink a part stack such that the last tab disappears and the chevron seemingly dangles past the left border of the stack, while the view toolbar is still rendering on the same row as the the tabs. Before this happens, the text starts clipping.

At a minimum we should try to preserve the 3.6 behavior:
- toolbar moves to a new row when it can no longer fit
- tab text starts shrinking
- view stays a minimum size so that you can see a tab

On Win7, Build id: I20100706-2130.
I synched a workspace and given my previous workbench layout, the team perspective opened with a synchronize view that has no title, just an icon...

when this happens and the stack is inactive, you can't really tell that the icon and close box are part of a tab vs. the rest of the view toolbar. It just looks like a big view toolbar.

upgrading severity to that of newer bug

Just found a scenario where this becomes especially disorienting.

- create a view stack with these views:
Problems Javadoc Declarations Console History

- size the stack so that when the Problems view is selected, its view toolbar and all the tabs fit nicely with about a tab width to spare.

- now select each view tab.

- when you get to "History" the lengthy view toolbar shifts all the tabs to the left and you completely lose your context. I thought some views had disappeared at first before noticing the chevron and realizing what the problem is.

This looks exactly like bug 318868 that you marked as dup of this one ;-)

the view toolbar layout is largely fixed in I20100718-2237.

We don't do that very last thing...it is still possible to shrink the view so that the tab disappears, and you can get a dangling chevron.

Since there are so many bugs on this same topic, I will target this bug to the specific still existing problem, that you can make a view so small that you get no text and a dangling chevron. Decreasing severity.
Comment 8 Dani Megert CLA 2010-07-20 11:58:12 EDT
I have to increase the severity again since it still looses the chevron giving the user the impression that a view is lost (or is this covered by one of the "many bugs" you mentioned in comment?).

Test Case:
1. start with new workspace with I20100701-1105
2. open 'Project Explorer' view
==> Package Explorer is no longer reachable and there's no indication that it's still there.

This seems better in 4.2-I20111025-2000: I can no longer make the chevron go away.

I still think we should first cut the part title before we entirely hide the tab.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got
resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some
reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it.
The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you
still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is
(for whatever reason) no longer relevant.

If the bug is still relevant, please remove the stalebug whiteboard tag.
