I have added a file: repo through the install software page and now I can't remove it using the preference page.

what build?
if the file has a trailing slash on it, you are probably seeing a regression introduced in bug 268580 and fixed as part of reviewing bug 310507.  It was broken between 20100506 and today.  That should be fixed in HEAD if you want to try again...

If it doesn't have a trailing slash, something else is going on.
