Description Susan McCourt CLA 2010-01-20 17:12:35 EST
When e4 ships, it will presumably have a cool, new splash screen.
We had interesting ideas/submissions for the tech preview, and I'm sure there will be lots of creative ideas for the final release.

I think the scope of change needs to be figured out the foundation/marketing level first. Many of the marketing materials are derived from the logo in the splash screen. If the basic logo is to change, that should likely be addressed first.

For example, we could hold a contest, but I think the contest should first establish the logo and branding, followed by the splash itself. If the basic logo/branding is not to change, then we can scope the splash to be more of a "sprucing up" of the existing splash. Using the same logo (image and typography), but perhaps playing with color or backgrounds

I opened bug 300271 against the foundation for the broader question. This question can track the specific issue of a splash once we've scoped the larger question.

Linda is going to make some cycles for doing a splash, sometime in June.
In the meantime, I've grown tired of looking at my "e4 behind Helios" splash, and now that we are self-hosting, we no longer want/need to send the message that this isn't the true e4.

For now, I've made a new splash that replaces "Helios" with
SDK 4.0
Early Adopter Release

cc'ing Ian and other interested parties.
Since this bug was opened, we've established that the eclipse logo is not changing.

So the work here is to define the text and naming that will appear on the Eclipse SDK 4.0 splash screen.

Linda is prepared to spend some time "sprucing up" the splash visually, but we'll need to have our story straight with respect to naming and what text appears on the splash.

The splash screen is used by both the platform runtime binary as well as the SDK, so "SDK" shouldn't appear on the splash screen. Something similar to the usual splash screen but with "4.0", and "Early Adopter Release" would be good.

Those seem to be the salient points, alright.

One other thought: Many of us will likely be switching back and forth between 3.x and 4.x versions often enough that it is probably useful for the splash screens to be easily distinguishable.

Agree. In the same way that you can look at the workbench and tell immediately that you are running something that looks different. We'll leave it up to Linda to define the specifics... ;-)

There was this competition about a new splash screen from Ian Skerrett. Perhaps some of them can be used (with the added information about Eclipse 4.0 SDK). I think the light color of the winner would fit to the new design.

It comes full circle!

Yes, I posed the question about the logo (bug 300271) in advance of designing a splash screen. Note the contest was for the logo, not a splash, though many of the submissions seemed to miss this point. We wanted to make sure we didn't "accidentally rebrand" eclipse in the process of doing a splash, so we stepped back and asked, "should we rebrand/change the logo first?"

What I get from the contest is that we are sticking with the current logo, so now we'll look at modernizing the splash in a way that still holds true to the logo branding, but with a twist...

I'm looking forward to the change. The new look and feel is modern, and the old splashscreen feel to not fit in.

It would be nice if the icon were tweaked (color-wise, or something...).
I would love to be able to distinguish in both the task bar and on the desktop. Not sure how realistic this is...

One minor comment: the copyright notice in the splash should be updated to say "Oracle Corporation" in place of "Sun Microsystems".
Comment 12 Susan McCourt CLA 2010-07-13 00:35:38 EDT
I'll take this one. We have a new splash. It still needs legal review and some polish, but I'll put it in to get size of build location right, etc.
Comment 13 Lars Vogel CLA 2010-07-13 05:03:59 EDT
cool. Looking forward to it. :-)
Comment 14 Susan McCourt CLA 2010-07-13 15:02:25 EDT
committed to HEAD >20100713. Should be in this evening's build.

Note I had to adjust the build location and also the build location foreground color so that the build ID was readable on the new colors. This may require further tweaking depending on everyone's feedback.

Also, the splash still needs legal review, I'll send it to the foundation.
I'm going to close this bug and if there is any tweaking or legal wording changes we can open a new one for the specifics.
