Description Susan McCourt CLA 2009-12-23 13:55:30 EST
There are numerous other bugs concerning the use of the ribbon, but I don't think one really captures the question of whether a ribbon style should be considered as part of the e4 story. Since there are technical and legal implications separate from the other e4 "new look" items, I am opening a separate bug for this.

Other bugs with discussion of ribbons or related to this:
bug 90145 - SWT support for ribbon
bug 293226 - win7 look and feel
bug 293637 - ribbon legalities
bug 293481 - new look for workbench

Pointer to Elias' screencast on this subject:

I know this is a very subjective topic, but I think there is a significant part of the Eclipse user base that would want to work with Eclipse in this way. I would assume it would be a user preference and it may become interesting to view the new visual design mockups in a ribbon mode.

retitling bug. I've marked the milestone as 4.0 for now, but there's no technical reason this would have to happen in 4.0 (it just seems appropriate to consider it as part of the visual design changes).

+1 for ribbon style as an option

According to CQ #3711, use of a ribbon UI in Eclipse (even if implemented using the native API) would still fall under the terms of the MS Office UI license, and therefore it is not acceptable to Eclipse. To follow the legal discussion and any follow-on ideas, please follow the CQ itself or bug #293637.

Hence, marking as WONTFIX.
