Description elhanan Maayan CLA 2009-11-23 09:30:49 EST
hi

enclosed are 2 screen shots for the qc mylyn connector

as you can see the right to left orientation, is ok, however it also reverses the entire layout of eclipse with makes it impossible to work and develop, but, right to left layout is excellent for hebrew and asian interface. so we need to be able to define an orientation for mylyn framework alone.

this is the same issue as in the hebrew locelized windows version, such a version has the entire UI right to left oriented, and exists as a sperate product, while the regular windows version, allows for hebrew input but contains LTR layout.

Elhanan, can you clariy what the current behavior is and what you would expect? Does Mylyn diverge from the behavior of Eclipse in regard to bidirectional support or layout of controls?
Comment 2 elhanan Maayan CLA 2009-11-24 07:38:57 EST
mylyb does not diverge from eclipe's bidi behavior, that's the problem, we want to be able to specify that it should, because, after all mylyn is an input form, and as such, should be right to left, but that doesn't mean we want our whole menu and layouts in eclipse to be right to left as well.

mylyn does not diverge from eclipe's bidi behavior, that's the problem, we want
to be able to specify that it should, because, after all mylyn is an input
form, and as such, should be right to left, but that doesn't mean we want our
whole menu and layouts in eclipse to be right to left as well

that would be very confusing, i know it's rather non-standard UI request, but as i said this is standard procedure in MS windows version since win 98 i think.

this is because as java developers we are allready working most of the time with english latin language, but our QA and users naturally work in hebrew and right to left mode. see when we edit and respond to their request we need to able to view the form in right to left mode.

Can you point out other places in Eclipse or in Windows that are similar to the Task Editor and use a layout that diverges from the platfom standard?

Would you expect the entire layout of all controls to be right to left or just the textual content of the controls?

i ?
i cannot remember other editors with such a feature but again i dont know much about other plug ins , i can assure youh though that any editor with such input requrments would benefit in the asian market , i need at the text to be rtl wise and then the layout
Comment 6 Steffen Pingel CLA 2009-11-25 18:34:33 EST
If I understand correctly it would be most important to use RTL when displaying or entering comment and description text and nice to have RTL layout for the controls as well.

I'll mark this bug as helpwanted since we do not have capabilities to provide or test this functionality at the moment. If someone provided a patch that preferably adds support for this feature on the platform level we would be happy to support those efforts.

well i'd love to help out anyway i can, the way i see it, it should be fairly easy, as the layout allready exist, it just needs to be more accessible.
something like a menu option on each editor and view window, that will allow the layout to be changed, and the preference would be saved in the user's workspace, by default it naturally inherit the command line argument.

i was told that swt has setOrientation method somewhere.

We are generally trying to avoid preferences and strive to find the best balance between customizability and good defaults. I don't think we would add a setting to each view and editor to allow configuration of the orientation as the layout is something that should be consistent across the platform.

It would be helpful if you could file another bug against the Eclipse platform UI component to get more input how this could be addressed on a higher level.

i created a bug in ui platform. i agree that consistency should be kept, however, i do not agree that it should be enforced, an example i listed there is the inability to change a textarea's orientation, by pressing Ctrl+Shift, while a textbox field allows it.

Mylyn has been restructured, and our issue tracking has moved to GitHub [1].

We are closing ~14K Bugzilla issues to give the new team a fresh start. If you feel that this issue is still relevant, please create a new one on GitHub.
