Patch to improve diagnosis information in error reporting

I was debugging some PDE Build issues today and had a hard time understanding
some error messages. It turned out that some hidden cause is simply not
logged/reported properly. The attached patch should help.

Thanks. I assume it's R3_6_api_cleanup. Does it mean that p2 will move some of its provisional API into the public? :)
