To build, we will need a feature to house JGit. I will attach one which we could start with for now.
Shawn, want to do this ;)? It involves creating a feature project in Eclipse 'org.eclipse.jgit.feature' And adding the current jgit bundle to it.
Shawn, Chris, could you give me a try to complete this task? ;-)

And we can't just reference the properties of egit. For one thing our license for JGit is EDL, not EPL, so the license needs to be different. You need to create a new feature.properties to reference the proper text for JGit.
