Description Neale Upstone CLA 2009-05-05 06:47:49 EDT
I found the bug below, still assigned to the deprecated Update component, so I've cloned this, as I think it's worthy of some thought.

I think there are two features that could be interesting with some peer-to-peer capability from ECF:
- Being able to use another Eclipse instance on the network as an update site (as mentioned in the original bug)
- Being able to use an Eclipse instance on the network as a mirror when updating.

+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #173897 +++

It would be a cool feature for the update mechanism to allow me to browse the network (like iTunes allows me to see other shared iTunes on the network).

I'm thinking use Bonjour/mDNS to do the location of other Eclipse installations. If they are willing, they could offer up their features/plugins to others.

Or, they could just operate like mirrors -- I'd still talk to an update site as normal but multicast to the local network to see if a neighbor already has the plugin I'm about to download. Since I can always verify against the signature, no corruption worries (actually, this also applies to a peer vended update site as well if I can download the signatures only from a mirror).

Just a thought.

Yes, this would be cool and we've talked about doing this for a long time. See lengthy discussion in bug 218534.
