My machine is behind a hardware firewall. (I have no control over this)

When I go to Help->Install New Software...

The code tries to start contacting a number of remote sites, which causes it to hang. This is even though I still have the default preference

Install/Update->Automatic Updates -> Automatically find new Updates

unchecked.

I have attached screen shot. Pressing the Cancel doesn't seem to have any immediate effect. After quite a long time it does cancel.

Note that there has been recent work in ECF to make canceling more responsive.  The other part of the problem is when to pre-contact repos for the wizard.
We're discussing approaches for this right now in bug #263593.
