One area leading up to M4 that hurt us was the lack of automated tests around shared install. We ran into both fairly basic as well as platform specific issues that need regression tests in place to avoid the same problems again.

Fixed in HEAD.

Currently the tests are disabled for the mac -- this is covered in bug 258365
