The task list tooltip obscures too much of the task list. Though it is quite visually appealing, the tooltip is largely redundant: The tooltip provides the following information: Bug id, summary, priority, repository, elapsed time and scheduling information. All of this with the exception of elapsed time and scheduling info is available from the categorized task list. A scheduled task list will also provide scheduling information. The tooltip is particularly problematic on the Mac platform where it's common to hover over a control to use a two-finger scroll gesture on the trackpad. I find myself using a two finger scroll gesture, and then having to continually move the mouse out of the hover position so that I can read the task list. Hovering over different areas of the task list in an attempt to relocate the tooltip is ineffective, since the tooltip always presents in the same location relative to the row under the pointer. Preferably the tooltip would be removed altogether. At the very least, Mylyn should provide the option of disabling the tooltip.

The task list follows the pattern of showing little detail (task list), more detail (tooltip) and all details (editor). In addition to providing the full summary when the task list is too narrow, the tooltip provides a very efficient of browsing incoming changes. I can see your point that it can get in the way and we have had requests before to make the tooltip optional for very similar reasons. I am not sure if this would justify a configuration option on the main settings page (http://wiki.eclipse.org/Mylyn/UI_Design#Avoid_Preferences) but how about a sandbox setting?
(In reply to comment #2) > the tooltip provides a very efficient of browsing incoming changes. For me the tooltip hinders browsing > but how about a sandbox setting? I'm really not interested in having the sandbox installed permanently. It's a great place to try things out -- so if you wish to get user feedback that would be a good place to put it. Longterm though it should be available to everyone if it's perceived as a valuable setting.
how about an alternate solution: placing the tooltip close to the mouse pointer? This is how normal tooltips work, and it would allow people to have the tooltip appear off-center. It would also avoid the need for a preference. Of course, such placement would have to avoid placing the tooltip off-screen. BTW, I've changed the summary so that the solution to this problem is not limited to a user preference.
I think a preference for tooltip placing would be overly complex and positioning was discussed at length on bug 189313. What are other's thoughts on adding a preference?
h3. Overview I was attempting to use the task list to review the list of outstanding issues in my query. The way I was doing it is not well supported by the task list because of this issue. After trying out this use case in different ways, here's what I've come up with: h3. Non-optimal Usage review the task list by * having a large view area * attempting to read the summary in the view (not the tooltip) * scrolling the view using a two-finger trackpad gesture h3. Optimal Usage review the task list by * scrolling through tasks using the up/down arrows on the keyboard * read the task summary and other details in the tooltip * avoiding mouse-based scrolling of the task list h3. Summary I can see that the placement of the tooltip has been carefully considered and is quite intentional. It enables a specific workflow where the user can review the task list by moving through the tasks one at a time. Feel free to close this issue as won't fix: I'll change the way that I'm using the task list. BTW, if it's not already documented it would be helpful for this information to appear somewhere, such as a tips/tricks section.
Thanks for summarizing this David. I think the only the place where this is currently documented is on the best practices slides. Please feel free to add a description to the user reference guide.

Thanks! I have added two sentences about related shortcuts that can come in handy.
