SWT provides this method, in RWT it does not yet exist.
This method is used by JFace and Workbench code

Applied patch to CVS HEAD.
Changed some minor things:
* removed "Not yet implemented" items from List javadoc
* removed "magic indicies" from the LCA test
* lowered the number of created items in the test
