In the updater, we generally (I have't looked everywhere) add things to the ArtifactManager before we save them. If the save fails for whatever reason, the ArtifactManager will be out of sych with the file system.

I suggest that we should only add to the manager if the artifact has been successfully saved first.

This defect is no longer applicable after recent refactoring.
