http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/ The link 'Development' in the 'Eclipse Classic 3.3.2' section is wrong: it should be renamed to 'Downloads', 'All Downloads' or 'Other Downloads' as it takes the user to the Eclipse project download page (which is good - please don't tweak the URL ;-).
The 'development' link came about from bug 205205 comment 42. See comments prior to see how the link came to life. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 205205 ***
I see that long discussion. No matter what's in there, the current label is just wrong. That's why I filed this bug to fix it, besides the ongoing discussion in the other bug.
Ok, I'll reopen and undupe, but I will cc Carolyn and let this bug simmer a bit, as I am too big of a coward to just go and change the term base on one person's opinion :)
> as I am too big of a coward to just go and change the term base on one >person's opinion :) But it's me ;-) Carolyn: I suggest that this still links to the download page but gets a better name - that's all there is.
Agree completely. :) I liked the original "All Versions" just fine, but I think I might like "Other Downloads" a tiny bit better. I am still planning to do some research and some thinking and make some (hopefully useful <g>) suggestions in bug 205205 (sorry Denis <g>) but I am currently swamped with Eclipse 3.4 endgame obligations. Until then, "Development" doesn't really describe "here's where you go to get other versions of the Eclipse base SDK - the place that all the Eclipse developers and the Eclipse RCP/plug-in developers and folks who like to live on the bleeding edge go to..."
(In reply to comment #5) > "Other Downloads" a tiny bit better. +1 I was actually looking for such a link yesterday. But I did not find it so I went through the "By Project" download page to get the build I needed.
How about Development Builds?
>How about Development Builds? Not so good as there are also release builds etc. Let's use 'Other Downloads'.
Agree. I think "Other Downloads" gives a hint that you might get more than just 3.3.2 downloads, whereas "Development Builds" tends to suggest - to me, anyhow - that it is only the builds leading up to 3.3.2. We can revisit this when 205205 is fixed. I think we can collectively come up with something that makes everything much clearer.
Ping. Can we fix this?
Agree. We should change this to "Other Downloads", because that is clearer than the current "Development". Sorry if my last 2 sentences in comment 9 were confusing. What I meant was, yes, let's make this change now. If we come up with something better in the future, great.
Ah. I changed it. Ironically, I had originally chosen the term 'Development' because that's what the SWT page refers to. I figured by choosing the same terminology as SWT I couldn't go wrong. Looks like I was wrong :) 'Other downloads' it is.
Hee hee - that is ironic. I guess the swt page really only has 2 downloads: - the latest "stable" release (i.e. 3.3.2) http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.3.2-200802211800/index.php#swt - and the latest "development" release (i.e. 3.4RC3) http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/S-3.4RC3-200805301730/index.php#swt We update the 2 links after every milestone. But http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/ itself points to a whole bunch of other stuff. So it deserves a more comprehensive name. <grin> Thanks for the change, Denis! I think it will help.
I have to reopen this as this fix got reverted by the Ganymede update. It now says 'All Versions' instead of the 'Other downloads' we agreed upon. The latter is better because that link also provides access to development builds i.e. not yet a version.
Apologies for the reverting text. It now says "Other Downloads". Marking as FIXED
