The completion status is based on the completion date being set. This date is set to the current date upon selection of completion state in the local task editor. Since a user may want to set the completion date to a date further in the past, removing the combo and adding a Completion Date field along with date picker seems more flexible.

Wouldn't that make the UI overly complex? I would prefer if local tasks could be marked as completed with a single click rather than selecting from a combo box or date picker.

Me too, the "mark complete" action should be a single click action, and it should be prominent in the UI, since it is an important action.
