Description Denis Roy CLA 2008-04-17 17:03:24 EDT
From bug 205205:

The bit about the license agreement at the top can be a footnote. Maybe the bit
about needing a JRE could be a footnote, too.
Comment 1 Eric Rizzo CLA 2008-04-17 18:10:24 EDT
I'm fine with moving the license agreement link, but I think the JRE note (especially the part about recommending Java 5 or above) needs to stay prominent. We used to get LOTS of newsgroup questions that ended up tacking down to a missing or incorrect JRE. Since this was added to the downloads page, those questinos have fallen off quite a bit.

Patch

Here's a patch for this. The JRE notice stays at the top, the disclaimer moves to the bottom, and the RCP logo is moved to the side column (as requested by Ian).

You can see it here: http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/index_dev.php

I'll commit this later unless someone objects.
Comment 3 Eric Rizzo CLA 2008-04-22 15:19:49 EDT
Looks much better, Denis. My only suggestion is to add a little more space above the "Eclipse Europa Winter Maintenance Packages" headline. Or maybe put the JRE and ZIP notices in a lightly shaded background. As it is they seem to be too easily ignored; the eye is immediately drawn to the package links with their pretty icons. Hmm...p-r-e-t-t-y c-o-l-o-r-s....

BIG +1

All in caps even!

Do you want to resize the Eclipse RCP Training graphic so it fits in the right hand column?

I'd like to, but if I set a smaller width, it will cut some pixels and look awful. Can Nathan resize it to be the exact size of the column?
Comment 7 Nathan Gervais CLA 2008-04-23 11:30:24 EDT
I've committed /images/rcptrainingsmall.jpg which is 128x128 let me know if you need smaller.
Comment 8 Denis Roy CLA 2008-04-23 11:46:16 EDT
Thanks, Nate. I've updated the page, and I put the OS-specific warnings in a little box that I fear is a bit too in-your-face.

Thoughts?

I don't think the highlight box is distracting. I think it draws some attention, but thats the point of it. It's not like you used <BLINK> or anything :-)

I'm not crazy about dashed outlines, but that's a matter of personal taste.
Comment 10 Nathan Gervais CLA 2008-04-23 14:30:40 EDT
Personally i think the highlight box with OS warnings could be safely moved under the packages listing. A big box at the very top of the page that tells me i might have problems unzipping the files before i even choose a download seems wrong to me.

I disagree. Comment #1 applies equally to the ZIP warning; trust me, the newsgroup regulars are very tired of answering that particular FAQ.
Comment 12 Denis Roy CLA 2008-04-23 14:42:57 EDT
I like the progress we're making here. I think Nate and I agree that the warnings in a pretty yellow box draw the eye much more, and they don't need to be taking up important real estate at the top.

I've moved the warnings below the packages, and removed the dashed border in favour of a solid border identical in colour to the other boxes. Actually, it is likely beneficial to move the warning, as we're disturbing muscle memory by doing so.

I like what's up there now.

With the OS warning information at the bottom of the package section this still appears above the fold (read no need to scroll) on a 1024x768 window and is still distinct enough to draw your attention to it.

+1 for the latest version
Comment 14 Denis Roy CLA 2008-04-24 15:45:10 EDT
I've put the legal notice back at the top, as it's a legal requirement for us to have it there.

In the end, the only change here is to move the OS-specific warning below the package group, which IMO un-clutters the top of the page.

I'll assume I still have Nathan's +1. I just need two more +1's to commit this.
Comment 15 Denis Roy CLA 2008-05-01 08:41:24 EDT
I've committed this.
