Description Daniel Le Berre CLA 2008-04-15 08:35:37 EDT
Build ID: 3.4 I20080410-1022

Steps To Reproduce:
When filling a bug report, users need to provide detailed plugin/feature informations regarding their plugins.

It is currently not possible to cut-and-paste the plugin name of version in the update manager.

As a consequence, one needs to re-type that information when filling bug reports.

A nice enhancement would be to allow the user to cut-and-paste the selected information.

More information:
Note that the informations about plugins can also be found from the Eclipse about dialog box. But the information is much more detailed (too much I guess) than within the update manager.

I believe this part of the about dialog is provided by PDE, so moving this bug to the PDE component.

>But the information is much more detailed (too much I guess)
>than within the update manager.

Bug #226577 discusses this part. The p2 model underneath has no notion of features so right now we don't provide any information in the p2 UI about the contents of an installable unit.

This is a p2 UI bug? How does the update manager have anything to do with PDE UI?

Or am I misunderstanding the request? What dialog are you trying to copy/paste from?

He wants to cut and paste from Help>About Eclipse SDK>Feature Details
or
Help>About Eclipse SDK>Plugin Details

I see now that is in platform UI. Moving there (sorry, I must have been looking at FeatureDetailsSection in the type dialog when I thought I saw PDE in the prefix).

Susan,

My initial wish is to be able to cut-and-paste the information on the update manager dialog box :)

Boy, I'm making this complicated!

Hi, Daniel. I believe I read your comment #0 a little too literally when you said you wanted "plugin name and version." I assumed you wanted the detailed information available in the plugin/feature details. Now that I reread what you said, I see that you probably didn't mean that, you want to copy the list of "Installed Software" from the update UI.

>When filling a bug report, users need to provide detailed plugin/feature
>informations regarding their plugins.

Depending on what the bug is about, the list of installed software in the update UI may not be enough info. It is probably only of use to us p2 developers when we say "what does your installed software list show?" It is a high-level view of what is installed.

If someone really needs to know the exact versions of all plug-ins, then you need to go to the about dialog. Today, you can push the "configuration details" button and from there you can copy the details to the clipboard. That is the most detailed way to send info about a problem.

So the question in this bug is whether it would also be useful to allow copy of just the plug-in list rather than have to go the configuration details.

I'll clone this bug to also note your question of copying just the "installed software" list. I'm just not sure how valuable this feature is for actually diagnosing a problem.

In 3.5, the about pages contributed by p2 provide clipboard support. Bug 266186 discusses moving this code into the installation page framework so that all table-based about pages would get it.
