The validator seems to hangs when validating the attached invalid schema

I can reproduce this problem using WTP 2.0.2.

Yes, is seems to be triggered by the \ in the selector's XPath expression. Probably, we'll need to pass this question along to the Xerces folks.

I contacted our Xerces friends and they've opened a JIRA for the issue. See https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/XERCESJ-1280 for details. The issue is already fixed but it likely will take a while until WTP adopts a new version of Xerces.

I'm thinking about resolving this as NOT_ECLIPSE. Keith, David any objections?
