Description Andre Costa CLA 2007-10-16 13:13:28 EDT
By default GNOME's window manager (Metacity) binds Alt+click with window movement, which makes it impossible to use the "Show filtered children" feature. The corresponding popup menu option should be an alternative, but it doesn't work as a toggle option -- it can be enabled but clicking again on it seems to have no effect, and all children remain visible forever from now on.
Comment 1 Andre Costa CLA 2007-10-16 13:18:48 EDT
UPDATE: I just realized that "forever" was too strong: disabling the "focus on active task" filter and re-enabling it hides again the irrelevant children of the focused node. Still, IMHO either the menu option should be a toggle or there should be another menu option to re-enable filtering.

"Show Filtered Children" should work when a task is active and the view is focused. Is this not the case? If not please provide the steps to reproduce.

That said, we still don't have a great answer on what to do about Alt+click on GNOME. The problem is that all standard modifiers are already beeing used for something (see bug 116948). So instead our only current work-around is to provide instructions on how to re-map Alt:

If you have additional ideas on how to improve on this situation please post.

Hi Mik, thks for the quick reply. First of all, please let me say Mylyn rocks, I am just beginning to explore it but I am very impressed so far =)

"Show filtered children" indeed works, but IMHO it works half-way, but maybe I got it wrong.

If I go on the package explorer (with "focus on active task" set), right-click on a class icon and choose "show filtered children", all methods and fields are shown. However, I don't see any way of undoing this -- I was expecting the "show filtered children" would act as a toggle, and now I realize it doesn't -- which is fine, as long as there's an easy way to re-enable filtering IMHO.

So far I can do that by right-clicking on the Java file icon above the class icon and choosing "show filtered children" for that node, but it doesn't make much sense to me, looks like a side-effect.

Did I miss anything obvious?

Thanks for the kind words Andre. Correct, there is currently no way of undoing Show Filtered Children without selecting a node, other than toggling the filter on the whole view. We haven't been able to come up with UI for this that doesn't cause more trouble than it's worth, but are still considering it. If you think that the toggle idea would work please file a new bug, that's probably worth exploring.

Hi Mik,

I just filed an RFE as bug 207565, let's see how the discussion goes there =)

Thks for your attention,
