Description Ronald Steinhau CLA 2007-09-19 07:19:04 EDT
Build ID: I20070809-1105

Steps To Reproduce:
1. Alt-Click a folder
2. Alt-Click a file usually used with an external editor, like an Enterprise Architect model file
3a. Often (but not always) the file shows but after alt-clicking it it disappears again. With a second try it seems to work.
3b. After performing a menu action on the file and then doing something else, the file disappears again from my context.

More information:
I assume this is more a misconception then a bug, but I think it is the most annoying thing of Mylyn currently. When you use files edited in an external program (outside Eclipse, e.g. Enterprise Architect model files) there is no way to pin these files in the Mylyn context (landmark does not help, as it behaves like 3b above). Therefore to activate a model transformation from within Eclipse on that file I repeatedly have to bring it back into the context. There should be a permanent landmark ability, where I am in control how long the file is in the context, because I can simply remove it manually if I like, too.
The 3a case is not bound to files for external editors, it seems to be a click behaviour problem.

I agree with the use cases that you outline, and there is something odd going on. Are you able to provide steps to reproduce with the plain SDK, but that have external editors, e.g. an MS Word document? We may also have some kind of race condition with Alt+click not working as expected, which we have not yet been able to identify (i.e. could this be a duplicate of bug 196327).
Comment 2 Ronald Steinhau CLA 2007-09-20 03:08:13 EDT
Yes, case 3a is the same problem as described in bug 196327. But case 3b (for each file not shown in an Eclipse editor window) is still different. The problem of the file disappearing from the context is not related to the file being open in an external editor or not. It simply disappears because Mylyn thinks it is not important anymore (I guess).

I cannot reproduce this with the few cases I tried. If you still see this problem with Mylyn 3.0 please reopen.
