Historically hyperlinks in the Task Editor been activated immediately on mouse rollover. This behavior been preserved when task list been converted to use platform hyperlink detectors. However all other editors activate hyperlinks only when Ctrl is pressed. Perhaps we should maintain this platform convention, which seem work quite well for the editable text.
This is a good point especially in terms of consistency, and if others are interested in seeing this kind of convergence with the Platform UI please vote for this bug. However, in this case I feel strongly that the benefit of consistency is outweighed by how much this would hamper discoverability. What I would like to see instead is Platform to provide a discoverability mechanism for hyperlinks, because all successful hyperlink UIs that I know of provide this (e.g. web pages, MS Smart Tags) and because any UI of this sort that's not discoverable is skewed towards advanced users. I put some background on this on bug 88293 comment#17 and other comments, but within the next couple of weeks I plan on filing a new bug report that Platform should provide an annotation mechanism (e.g. faint underline) for on-demand hyperlinks and will CC you.
For discoverability we could do two things: - use hyperlink detectors to decorate/colorize text in the text areas - add control decoration (similar to one used to show that there is a Ctrl-Space) to show that text widget like "url" or "depends on" fields have hyperlinks enabled
