the documentation for external tools should give concrete examples of variable 
name expansion as well as explain the issues around using filenames with spaces 
as arguments to avoid future programs such as those found in bug 18407.

The user guide was updated to document the supported variables and gives a 
number of examples on how they will be expanded.

The path/filename with spaces issues is documented in the readme file.
