Description Chris Gross CLA 2006-12-20 11:05:56 EST
In order to create really attractive UIs, I've increasingly been hampered by the standard menubar colors. I'd like to be able to have setBackground/setForeground on Menu (at least for menu bars). I understand that this is unlikely to happen because some OSes wont do this (i.e. Mac). It could be a hint, or another option is for the menubar to inherit the colors from the parent shell.

This is really high on my list of things that prevent really great UIs.

oops meant for that to go to SWT originally.

Surprisingly I couldn't find a previous request for this. SN do you know which platforms allow the menu bar colour to be set?

I have a hack of this for Windows. On the other platforms (except the Mac), a menu bar is an operating system control so it should be doable.

It would be very cool to get this into 3.3. I know you guys have tons going on.

I’m not sure what we (end users) can do (except giving votes) to this kind of bugs.

I wouldn’t say that there isn’t enough interest for this feature. It’s just sad state that people learn to live with this kind of limitations at the core of the platform. At first we watch the bug, then we see how it gets postponed from milestone to milestone, then it’s too late to implement this kind of a feature before next major eclipse release, then we start working on other projects (and leave eclipse land). Two or three years later somebody mentions SWT and we remember our favorite bug and it’s still there, open, unresolved.

I believe this one is not trivial to fix (obviously) but I also believe that this issue deserves mentioning. I believe that it will get more visibility when people start using E4.

This ugly eye cancer Windows UI-Theme made me using V$ instead of eclipse.
