Description Torkild Resheim CLA 2006-12-13 03:26:55 EST
Build ID: M20060921-0945

Steps To Reproduce:
Project managers may wish to have separate queries for issues that are resolved and needs to be verified and closed. These will not be displayed in normal circumstances.

More information:
When the "completed tasks" filter is applied (which probably is the case most of the time), no issues will show in these queries. It would be useful if one could override this filter in a query and display the issue summary using the normal presentation. A checkbox image overlay on the query folder could illustrate the special nature of the query.
Comment 1 Robert Elves CLA 2006-12-13 13:36:31 EST
This could be added as an option to the existing query pages.
Comment 2 Torkild Resheim CLA 2006-12-13 16:36:19 EST
Yes, that was my idea too. It should be fairly straightforward. I can lend a hand and provide a patch unless any of project members feel they want it.
Comment 3 Mik Kersten CLA 2006-12-15 22:03:04 EST
Torkild: before submitting a patch, could you please post a brief description of the exact UI change that you would like to see, and how this will be used? We have to make sure that this kind of filter suppression does not result in confusion because filters will then have a custom mode, more of these modes might be requested, etc. Fyi, the way I current work-around this is to "Go Into" a query and turn the filter off then, and when I'm done with it, to go up to the root.
Comment 4 Eugene Kuleshov CLA 2006-12-15 23:00:33 EST
Mik, I guess you mean "...turn Focus on Workweek off"?
Comment 5 Mik Kersten CLA 2006-12-18 22:08:47 EST
Yes, you would need to have both Focus on Workweek and the Filter Completed Tasks off to see all completed tasks.

I was actually wondering if the better way to do this would be along the lines of making the Focus on Workweek more configurable. For example, instead of showing just the tasks completed today it could show tasks completed this week. But as usual we have to tread carefully here in order not to bloat the UI.
Comment 6 Robert Elves CLA 2007-01-02 13:23:01 EST
Once we have day 'bins' in the Focus on Workweek mode then exposing completed tasks in the day they were completed would make a lot of sense to me.
Comment 7 Mik Kersten CLA 2007-01-29 13:35:00 EST
Sounds right. Let's revisit this once we have done bug 147084 and put some mileage on that UI.
Comment 8 Mik Kersten CLA 2007-04-02 14:55:42 EDT
Bug 147084 is completed and released with 2.0M2.

Torkild: do you still need the support described here?

Yes, we do need to display resolved but unclosed issues in a good manner. I was planning to do something about this myself but got too busy with the just released Eclipse based AVR32 Studio (http://www.atmel.com/dyn/products/tools_card.asp?tool_id=4116). I'm still at 3.2 so I have not tested the new merged view. I'll do that ASAP and let you know if this issue can be closed without further due.
Comment 10 Torkild Resheim CLA 2007-04-04 03:06:34 EDT
Ah, of course the new version also supports Eclipse 3.2. I took it for a spin and found that the requested enhancement is not covered. I'll see what I can do about it.
Comment 11 Eric Rizzo CLA 2008-08-22 09:03:29 EDT
I do not use Focus on Workweek, but I too see a strong need for individual queries to be able to override the global Filter Completed Tasks setting. Any chance this can be some attention - the last comment above is quite old.
Comment 12 Mik Kersten CLA 2008-09-05 00:17:06 EDT
I'm concerned that this would increase the complexity of the Task List too much, since it's not typical to have filtering parameters for elements within a view. Can the common use cases not be supported by tweaking the query itself? If not, maybe that support needs to be added to the query mechanism for that connector?

I don't know of any way to override the Hide Completed Tasks filter via the query. The problem to me is that there are particular queries that by their nature are going to include "completed" tasks (and isn't the exact definition of "completed" based at least in part on the connector and repository)?

Here's the specific use case that I run into: we use JIRA, and I usually use queries that are "saved filters" from the repository. A very typical filter is something like "all issues that were fixed in version 6.0.2" but Mylyn does not handle that query well because by definition all the tasks (issues) in that list are in a state that Mylyn considers "completed."

To be honest, I'd be happy if the "hide complete tasks" option were just turned off by default. It is not easy to figure out what is going on if you don't know that option exists. But that would only satisfy my very specific usage pattern; I think this bug is broader.

Thanks for the use case Eric, that helps. "Hide complete tasks" actually is off by default. The other straightforward thing that we could consider doing is allowing easier toggling of that filter by putting it on the toolbar when the view is not focused. Would that helpÉ

Yes, that would help a lot in my opinion (I'm not sure how it got turned on in my workspace, because I didn't even know it existed until I was poking around trying to find out why my tasks weren't showing up). So having a toggle button on the view toolbar would have made it a lot more obvious.
One concern might be the view toolbar getting too crowded, especially now that bug 240103 has added a Collapse All button. But maybe that's not a problem yet; I haven't seen bug 240103 in action yet.

Mylyn has been restructured, and our issue tracking has moved to GitHub [1].

We are closing ~14K Bugzilla issues to give the new team a fresh start. If you feel that this issue is still relevant, please create a new one on GitHub.
