The user should be left the option of not stripping the binaries. I will attach a patch that makes the Makefile skip stripping the binaries if the env variable NO_STRIP has a value. Stripping was added in bug 88129. This patch is needed for the Gentoo ebuild to follow the Gentoo packaging policy.

Seems easy enough. SN do you have a preference regarding how one would indicate to not add the -s switch?
Seems ok to me as long as SSQ agrees. Make sure the default is to strip.
This is fine for me. Make it gets done on all platforms.

As build scripsts adheres to CFLAGS if set, it can be used to pass -s. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 393834 ***
