Description Jörg Thönnes CLA 2006-11-07 15:57:12 EST
If I run "Search for updates of currently installed features",
the dialog "Update Site Mirrors" pops up several times and I have to
select the specific mirror manually.

Since the update process is a rather lenghty one, I have to watch the process all the time and select mirrors.

I would prefer to have a priority list of mirrors to contact or to have a
checkbox which restricts the update site to the site saved in the feature to update.

Then there would be no need for manual selection and I could run the update
unattended.

I'd like to add the following suggestion, with relation to this bug and to bug 142910:

Whether or not Eclipse is going to select a mirror automatically, why not have Eclipse select the mirror *after* the user chooses what updates to download?

In terms of burden on the main servers:
Right now the main servers are burdened with requests for list of mirrors; I imagine that the network bandwidth involved in getting the information about the updates, as opposed to the actual updates themselves, is not much greater than the bandwidth used to get the list of mirrors.

Isn't there an option in Eclipse to automatically select mirrors? Our servers send the list of mirrors sorted according to your geographic location, so the first mirror should be in the same country, or at the very least, the same continent as you are, and you don't need to manually pick mirrors each time.

This is trivial; trust me.

I suggest closing this as WORKSFORME, as the required automated mechanism requested in comment 0 is already implemented.

Dialog Update Site Mirrors if running from Germany, Europe

This mirror selection dialog does not show the sites in geographical near order. I am located in Germany, Europe. And the first sites listed are US, then Israel, then China (!).

Automatically selected mirror if running from Germany, Europe

If I select the check box "Automatically select mirror" in the dialog for new features to install, it picks the first mirror from list, ie not geographically local to me.

Crud, that's not right. Can you go to this URL and tell me if German/European mirrors are listed first?

You can go to Preferences>Install/Update and check the box to automatically select nearest mirror. Since a lot of people don't know about it, I copied it into the mirror selection dialog. You can revert it back in the preferences if you want to do it later.

Jörg, I've opened bug 182328 as the mirror list is provided to UM by the Eclipse servers. Let's resume our discussion there.

Sounds good, but there is no such check box in Eclipse 3.2.2.
Only "Automatically select mirrors" and a "Update Policy URL".

Shall I post another screen shot?

OK, that's fine.
