Description Jeff Calcaterra CLA 2006-09-29 13:11:30 EDT
Progress bars need to be provided for any action that can potentially take more than 5 seconds on an average PC with log with more than 1000 events. This includes:
Import log file, import symptom DB, export symptom DB, Log analysis, Correlations and Log interactions

The progress bar should be displayed in the z-dimension by default and should have a Cancel button.

THis is required for RCP and IDE
Comment 3 Valentina Popescu CLA 2006-12-01 14:52:37 EST
What is a z-dimension?
Comment 4 Jeff Calcaterra CLA 2006-12-01 14:56:26 EST
z-dimension is a window that is on top of the current window. A pop-up window in other words.

Just a comment.

If the progress indicator is displayed in the foreground as a pop-up, there should be a button also for sending it to the background. I believe Eclipse has this support, but not sure about RCP. It would nice to be able to send the activity to the background.

The implementation of progress bars is inconsistent in LTA. What is in the picture below is there for Correlate and Import, but not for Analyze, unless this has been added to a later driver.

File->Import/Export Log Files Pop-up with progress.
Analyze No pop-up. Progress bar appears in lower right-hand corner.
Analyze All No pop-up. Progress bar appears in lower right-hand corner.
Correlate Pop-up with progress.
Correlate All Not sure how to do this, but I assume, same as Correlate
Symptom database import Nothing, but an hourglass cursor for a process that can take as long as five minutes.

If users do not notice the progress bars in the lower right corner, the progress bar in the lower right corner is not visible are not much better than ones that are not there. Web browsers do display progress in the lower corner, but the user typically sees something happening in the browser and typically, they see the window refresh in a few seconds. All of the operations that we are concerned about typically take longer than that.

So the list of what needs to be done to satisfy this requirement is:
1. Make a pop-up for Analyze like the one for Import and Correlate
2. Create a new progress bar for symptom import.

All of the other progress bars seem to be right. This one still needs to be fixed. I changed the title to reflect this.
Comment 9 Eugene Chan CLA 2007-08-09 18:30:07 EDT
raising priority per consumer's feedback.
Comment 10 Dave Smith CLA 2007-08-10 01:45:19 EDT
Resolving this as WONTFIX because it is no longer required by the consumer that
requested it.
Comment 11 Alex Nan CLA 2008-06-24 18:16:55 EDT
Closing.
