The Modeling project is in need of a logo for its website, t-shirts, presentations, etc. An initial contribution will be posted on the website with a link to this bugzilla in the hopes that something better can replace it ;) Ideally, the logo will fit into the default Phoenix look and feel of the website, and also be appropriate for printing. Please submit your entries and feedback here by September 30, 2006. The Modeling PMC will then decide which logo wins.
Created attachment 48507 [details] Initial logo contribution Based on a logo designed by myself with feedback from Ed Merks and Stephen Henderson.
Created attachment 48508 [details] Initial logo contribution - with projects This is the original logo, including individual Modeling project names.
my eyes ;) Is there a prize? Maybe the winner gets to have a beer with Ed Merks and be in the presence of his dry sense humour for awhile. I posted this on the planet to possibly get more attention.
If I see Ed wearing a shirt with this logo on it around the lab, I'm calling the fashion police :)
Created attachment 48840 [details] PDF including 3 logos 3 logos that I designed. Comments are welcome.
Created attachment 48843 [details] proposol for a new logo My proposal for the new logo (see attachment) is based on the old one, but is more abstract. It retains the colors and elements of the Eclipse logo. The proposed logo shows an atomic model in which the electrons and their tails form the letter 'M' for 'Modeling'.
Created attachment 48854 [details] A new direction Hopefully, this one won't cause as much blindness ;-) It's still in need of refinement, but has a more "modeling-ish" feel than the first attempt.
I really like the newest proposal by Rich. It does look more "technical", which I find appropriate for the context.
I personally like the bottom one (on the PDF) that Gen did. I like the gears concept. Plus, that sexy gear can be used on the about page for when the GMF feature is installed. Although, the second one by Rich is pretty good, I would be the emp letters white though for better readability when smaller.
I think WTP has already laid claim to gears. And I believe the About logos are supposed to identify the feature providers, not the features themselves -- hold your mouse over the Eclipse logo and you'll see "Eclipse.org". I definitely think Rich's new attempt is big improvement over the first one. I thought we were trying to avoid introducing yet another TLA, though. I think just "Modeling" together with the Eclipse logo (or at least a hint of it) would be more effective than "EMP". Holger's is definitely my favourite so far. It's quite simple, fun and cartoonish, and I think an atomic model is the best metaphor we've seen so far. However, I think a logo with a horizontal, rectangular envelope is probably more useful (especially atop Web pages) than a sqaure one. Sorry that all I have is opinions. If I had any artistic talent, I'd contribute something more meaningful.
Created attachment 48940 [details] Alternate Symbolism * Divisions related to the 4 meta-modeling layers * Arrows between the layers try to relate to transformation * Circle and square relate to objects, top and bottom ones different (thanks to transforms) * 4 lines per division relate to Eclipse logo's lines ... and yes... I read Dan Brown not so long ago :-)
Created attachment 48942 [details] Slide version... Slide version... Colours just did not make it right in the previous EMF file
Not to be rude or anything and I certainly don't have a talent for creating logos but I find most of the proposals to complex for something like a logo. Like the original most of the proposals don't scale well. When made very small the atom model looses the lines and the writing can't be read anymore. I also find it very annoying to have to read stuff in a logo to understand its context. The logo should hold not much more than the word EMP or Modeling. From the Proposed I like the pdf version with the gear the most but as stated above the gear seems to be taken by WTP. Also the eclipsed sun with the name next to it seems to be a good starting point for further enhancements. Maybe a stylized atom instead of the eclipsed sun.
Created attachment 48957 [details] Simplicity Before my trial license expires, I figure I'd incorporate some feedback into this one: very simple, just modeling word in center, six spheres to represent the project's logical groups, and something for the gear fans ;)
Created attachment 48958 [details] Near simplicity Same as previous, but with restored outer ring and connectors.
Gosh, so many cool ideas! ;-) One thing I keep imagining, but am not talented enough to create is the idea of a ring world around an Eclipsed planet; I suppose a ring world really should orbit a star though. Even Saturn-like rings along with shepherding moons around a planet might look cool. Or perhaps artificial satellites in orbit and casting shadows... The most grandiose "model" would be a Dyson Sphere. What's that you ask? ;-) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyson_sphere Some of the images at this link are pretty cool: http://users.rcn.com/jasp.javanet/dyson/
(In reply to comment #14) > Created an attachment (id=48957) [edit] > Simplicity > > Before my trial license expires, I figure I'd incorporate some feedback into > this one: very simple, just modeling word in center, six spheres to represent > the project's logical groups, and something for the gear fans ;) > I like this idea as an improvement make the light come from some other point to increase the 3D effect of the spheres. The other derived logo I find to cluttered.
Created attachment 49310 [details] My logo for this week... I'm not sure how far this one reflects everyone's comments... well, I tried, at least. Of the valuable comments, followings are what I had in mind when drawing. - simple - scale well (to smaller size) - planet + ring + atom/electron/whatever it is... - no gears Comments?
Gen's latest prototype (comment 18) is perfect. That's the one.
Created attachment 49339 [details] A new proposal from a non technical perspective These logos in the attached PDF were designed by Martin Schumacher and Maike Citrich from our advertising agency Sektor (http://www.sektor-werbeagentur.de). They told us that it is very important to keep a logo simple but also unique and functional. Both Logos can work in "full-color", but also in two color presentation (black and white), spot color, or halftone. They abide by basic design principles of design (space, color, form, consistency, and clarity). The logos use vector graphics, so the they can be resized without loss of fidelity. Wolfgang Neuhaus
Created attachment 49512 [details] Updates with some variants. 4 variations of the same logo attached. - Full colored (same as previous) - No gradients - Black - White
I really like the full color gradient one. Even without the text, this is an image that could be easily recognizeable even in a small icon sized version. Very cool...
I really like Gen's (comment #21). I think all 4 can be used (different contexts, etc..). The only concern is how they will look on a white background. (Especially if we want to get one on a T-Shirt for Ed to wear around the lab). How does it look with coloured text on a white background? (as another alternative).
Created attachment 50021 [details] Second Iteration, non technical perspecticve Hi all! This is the next iteration from our advertising agency. I think, Martin Schumacher from SEKTOR has done a great job. Thanx for that. The first logo is a basic version for print. The second logo is a high end version for the web and high end flyers. The last one is the inverse basic version. Opinions? Greetings from Germany, Wolfgang Neuhaus
It's nice, but I think the globe looks an awful lot like the AT&T logo as appears on this page: http://att.sbc.com/gen/landing-pages?pid=3308
Gen's is definitely my favourite so far, by a long shot. I've got a couple of ideas to consider: 1. I wonder if a little more vertical space between the words would be nice. It looks kind of tight right now. 2. Is the main globe meant to be the same one that's in the Eclipse logo? It looks a lot like it, but not quite the same, especially the lens flare. If it is meant to be the same, maybe there is a hi-res image of it, without text, that could be reused? Would such reuse be allowed? These are just my suggestions, and I definitely don't claim to be an artist. :) I definitely think this one has great potential for a variety of uses. I could imagine as you scale it down, "eclipse" and "project" could be removed. When it gets down to icon size, all the text could be removed. Nice work, Gen!
Created attachment 50141 [details] KISS (Keep it short and simple)
Thanks for all your comments. Unfortunately, no spare time for drawing now... Before 9/30, I WILL try to find time and will work on the following: - Icon version, w/o text (like ones in About Eclipse...) - One that fits white background In my opinion, full colored gradients will likely look bad on T-Shirts... in which case, something like 4 colored non-gradient version should look better. But I do agree logos should look great on white background. - Just the word 'modeling' (instead of 'eclipse modeling project',) for smaller variant. I'll give it a try... - More vertical space Okay, I'll try to create one with more space (as Dave suggested,) but I personally feel comfortable with the tight spacing in the current version. Let me prepare both versions and see which one everyone prefers. For the sphere objects (in Dave's comment,) I intentionally made them different from the original eclipse logo. Although I could have used eclipse logo which is provided in Adobe Illustrator file format, I'm not sure if the logo usage guideline allows me to do that. Also, lens flare effect DOES look cool, but believe me, it's hard to print nicely on T-shirts :)
Created attachment 50362 [details] Full colored logo x 2 styles, with different BG colors Incorporated the comments. I hope everyone likes these. Since the one with white background didn't look so great, I also created an outlined text version (which, after all, doens't look any better but included here anyway.)
Created attachment 50808 [details] Earth Core Idea I think that we could design the logo similar to the 'Earth Core' view. The Earth should be changed to the blue planet of the Eclipse of course. I see two advantages of this idea: 1. Meaning: the model often is a 'hidden core' of the application and other parts are clients that interact with it; this logo just depictures the concept. There may be semantic collisions with other projects like Equinox and RCP but we are the first to grab the land ))) 2. Scalability: this image may be perfectly downsized to 16x16 gif so we have an icon too.
(In reply to comment #29) The Modeling PMC has unimously selected the logo contributed by Gen Nishimura to be our official logo! Thanks to all for taking the time to contribute. As soon as we complete the contribution questionnaire, we'll be updating our website, etc. with a greatly improved look.
Created attachment 51298 [details] Logo file in Adobe Illustrator (CS2) format Original Illustrator document attached. ._EclipseLogo3.ai is something for Mac, which can safely be ignored on Windows (just load the EclipseLogo3.ai file.)
I thought it would be a good idea to run the winning submission past the team responsible for the original Eclipse artwork, to see if they had any comments or suggestions. I talked to Linda Watson, and like everyone around here, she was really impressed with Gen's artwork! I also asked about the question of whether the logo usage guidelines would allow for the original Eclipse imagery to be used in place of the similar spheres in this logo. She said there would be no problem with that, and agreed that it would be a nice thing to try: "We could try giving her [Gen] just the 'sphere' layers in our original design file and see if they incorporate well into her design... I think that might work.... Although the Foundation is very relaxed around Eclipse identity, I do think it's preferable that there be some consistency when graphical eclipse elements are used." She then clarified that the logos at http://www.eclipse.org/artwork/index.php are layered, so Gen could choose an appropriate size from the .ai files, then isolate the layers she needs. If Gen and the PMC are okay with this, I think that would be worth trying, as it could add just a touch more pizazz to the logo and, more importantly, increase consistency with the Eclipse identity artwork. The only other advice she gave was for the PMC to think about what its immediate needs and intents are for the artwork. Obviously, we'll be using it for the Web site, but will we also want to use it on posters or T-shirts? If so, we might want to think about doing something like what they have done with 4 colour and 2 colour versions (pictured on the above Web page), as the former is higher quality and the latter cheaper to print. She suggests starting with what we have immediate need for, and adding as new need arises.
Created attachment 51573 [details] modeling logo over original eclipse artwork Dave, Created a sample image using 'deep purple' background. If PMC choose this one for the logo, I'll work on the rest (other variants like 2 colors, white background, etc.)
It's absolutely beautiful!!
Wow, I love it! Thanks, Gen!
Hey, if you don't use this latest one, can we use it for Orbit? :-) Looks good. Perhaps I'll have to contract Gen for some Equinox and Orbit artwork...
Looks great, Gen. Thanks again. I think we're all happy with this final version, and we'll have to avoid making further tweaks if we're ever to get the CQ processed ;)
(In reply to comment #37) > Hey, if you don't use this latest one, can we use it for Orbit? :-) Looks > good. Perhaps I'll have to contract Gen for some Equinox and Orbit artwork... > Sorry Jeff, but PMC seems to be happy with the latest one. I'd be happy to work with you to create something else for equinox project if you really need a logo. Or you could even run the "equinox logo contest", in that case, I might submit something.
Thanks. Perhaps we'll do that... I'll be sure to let you know
Created attachment 52001 [details] The modeling logo The modeling logo in 8 formats. I had trouble converting to PDF, converted to PNG format instead. I also wanted to attach the original .ai files but omitted this time, because of their file size (10MB in total.) from Rich > all she'll need is a statement from you stating it was 100% your work. Okay, all these artworks are 100% work of mine, EXCEPT for the eclipse sphere image taken from http://www.eclipse.org/artwork/.
Created attachment 52462 [details] modeling logo for your desktop background This is a desktop background (1400x1050) using modeling logo, that I've personally been using. Ed told me that it is a good idea to share it here, so here it is.
Logo posted, resolving bug. Thanks everyone!
Rich, May I suggest resizing the image in Photoshop? Leaving it to the browser just doesn't do it justice.
Good idea. Gen, can you please attach the original *.ai files? That will give us the best option for resizing, I suspect.
Created attachment 59934 [details] Modeling logo in jpeg format Dave, Rich, I'm so sorry for such a late response. I wasn't aware of your posts in December last year(...until today) I'll post the Illustrator files here later, but here's a jpeg file produced directly from Illustrator (286x193) which you can use on the website.

Created attachment 60980 [details] first draft of a "modeling project icon" for use in features (About dialog)
Created attachment 61193 [details] 2nd draft of feature icon Okay, here's my work. I couldn't decide which colors to use for the background...so there're 4 types. Additionally, (though I'm not sure if you are in need of this,) the ones in the right hand side includes subproject name (I picked EMF as an example.)
Nice, thanks Gen! I vote for the one in the left column, second from the bottom (the one with the darkest background). Although I'm sure Ed can make use of the one with EMF on it, we'll be lumping all the Modeling projects under a single About dialog icon (otherwise, Europa would ship with quite a collection of icons in the About dialog if each project had their own icon :).
(In reply to comment #57) > we'll be lumping all the Modeling projects under a single About dialog icon Okay, let's go with the left hand sides then (Having a dozen modeling icons in the About dialog must be cool though :) My personal preferences are the 1st and 2nd from top. I thought these closely resemble the Phoenix style (I like Phoenix colors very much.)
I like the first two in the left column the best.
Only thing I'd suggest is to add a transparent border around the icon so it's not so blocky. Perhaps 2px-radius rounded rectangle? Otherwise, I like the top two in the left column. Much better than my hacky one. ;-)
(In reply to comment #60) > Only thing I'd suggest is to add a transparent border around the icon so it's > not so blocky. Gen: Ed tells me the PMC has met and agreed to choose the top-left icon. They'd also like to see - if possible - a variant with softened edges so that our icon works on a transparent background, like the platform's version: http://dev.eclipse.org/viewcvs/index.cgi/org.eclipse.platform/eclipse32.png?view=markup
(In reply to comment #61) > Ed tells me the PMC has met and agreed to choose the top-left icon. The problem is, the white ring simply disappears on lighter colored background, and the lens flare effect doesn't look great either. So if you need an image that works on any background colors, I'll try to create something different from current one.
(In reply to comment #62) > Nick, I was photoshopping the icon to make background transparent, but turned > out to be a little difficult. > > The problem is, the white ring simply disappears on lighter colored background, > and the lens flare effect doesn't look great either. I'm not suggesting that you remove the entire background... just try erasing the _edges_ of the 32x32 square so that the content is, say, 30x30 inside the square, with a 2px, softened transparent edge. .png can handle alpha blending, right? So you can give the icon a bit of "anti-aliasing" (so to speak) so that it won't feel like a hard square. Hell, even erasing the four corner pixels (0,0; 0,32; 32,0; 32,32) would help to round out the square a little. Does that make more sense?
Created attachment 61665 [details] Minor update + faded versions Nick, thanks for the explanation. I thinks I got it right this time... Attached zip file contains 3 files. 1. ModelingFeature_SolidSquare.png Non-faded version but a little bit larger sphere + smaller ring. This is minor update to the previous version. I had to make the ring a little smaller in order to fade the edges... so I've also enlarged the sphere. 2. ModelingFeature_RoundFade.png 4 Corners faded in rounded shape. I believe this is closest to something Nick wanted. Maybe I should've faded the edges as well? 3. ModelingFeature_SquareFade.png All 4 edges faded.
Created attachment 62106 [details] ModelingFeature_CutCorners.png vs. Mylar's feature.gif (In reply to comment #64) > Created an attachment (id=61665) [details] > Minor update + faded versions As Gen & I discussed today on ST, we're both not 100% happy w/ the faded edges. Here's my take on it, with just the corners cut (and the Mylar icon for comparison). Another suggestion was to just drop out the background but keyline the planet and ring so that it is visible on a transparent (grey) background.
Created attachment 62134 [details] Transparency, and... After talking with Nick, I've created one icon for transparency. (ModelingFeature_WhiteBG.png) However, looking at what Nick has done in comment #65, Nick's work actually looked a lot better than mine... so I also created something similar to that, but using larger sphere. (ModelingFeature_PurpleBG.png) And looking at the Mylar icon, I thought it'd look even better if modeling icon was similar to platform/mylar icons (especially when installed together), so here are two more. (ModelingFeature_WhiteBG2.png & ModelingFeature_PurpleBG2.png)
I like ModelingFeature_WhiteBG.png
Created attachment 62168 [details] About Eclipse snapshot w/ all the modeling icons lined up for comparison and ease of voting +1 for ModelingFeature_WhiteBG.png (#7 from left to right). The stripes across the planet (#4, #6) look too busy. On the other hand, they look like fringes? cilia? when behind the planet, which IMHO looks odd. I wonder if we should drop them entirely, or make them look more like anime action lines? ;-) Does it matter that the modeling logo is a darker palette than the Eclipse and Mylar ones?
Created attachment 62256 [details] Brighter, w/o lines (In reply to comment #68) Like this?

+1 cool!
