Description Ed Burnette CLA 2006-06-12 10:46:58 EDT
[from cross-project-issues-dev, Callisto 3.2RC4a]
Issue: In the Update Site Mirrors dialog, the default is "Callisto Discovery Site" (I assume that's Canada) and the second choice for me is "[United States] University of Texas at Arlington (http)". This is different from the mirror list on the download page for the SDK, which gives them in this order (2 and 3 are random):
   1. (default) "[United States] SAS Institute Inc. (http)" (*)
   2. (random) "[United States] OSU Open Source Lab (http)"
   3. (random) "[United States] University of Texas at Arlington (http)"
   ...
   37. (last) "Main eclipse.org downloads area (http)"
Shouldn't the two mirror lists be somewhat similar, with the Main server in Canada *not* being the default?
*Note: SAS has a local mirror accessible only to SAS employees since we have so many people inside the company downloading Eclipse. It shows up on the main download page for the SDK, but doesn't show up on the Update Site Mirror page - why?

Update does not do sorting of mirrors. We only pass your locale (country and time zone). The rest is up to the server to sort its mirrors based on its own algorithm that may or may not use this information and can decide on geographical granularity. As far as I know main eclipse update site just tries to keep you on the same continent. Update takes that list and presents it to the user as is.

Actually, I think this is a question for the webmaster.

The issue is that the list of callisto mirrors generated by a script as
identified by the site.xml.

mirrorsURL="http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/callisto/releases/site.xml&format=xml&protocol=http"

The mirror list on the download page for the SDK is generated by the same
download.php script, but points to a different directory.

Your local mirror may not carry callisto, or the callisto update sites may not
include local mirrors.

The SAS mirror is not listed as either an Update mirror, nor as a Callisto mirror. Of course, we can't actually check, because it's a private mirror. Please have the mirror admin contact me.

The mirrors list generated by the server does not return an entry for "Callisto Discovery Site" to the client. I don't know where that comes from, but the server's list is generated with this URL:

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/callisto/releases/site.xml&format=xml&protocol=http

D.

Ok the SAS mirror thing has been worked out, so you can scratch that part. However, "Callisto Discovery Site" is still listed as the first "mirror" in Update Manager (Update Site Mirrors dialog). I assume that means the main eclipse.org Canadian servers.

Shouldn't that be identified geographically, e.g., "[Canada] Main Callisto Discovery Site (http)", or "[Canada] Main eclipse.org downloads area (http)"?

Also shouldn't it appear last in order to encourage the use of mirrors?

Kim opened up a bug for Ed's last comment.
