This is the second e-mail I get regarding our Playboy Entreprises, Inc. mirror server. In some cases, networks filter the URL containing "playboy", in some other cases, users are flagged as pornography surfers because a page contains a link to mirrors.playboy.com, and in this case, interesting points are raised. I think it would be unfortunate to have to discontinue using a perfectly good mirror site; however, under the circumstances, is it worth it? Hi, I notice you have playboy as a mirror for the eclipse project. Playboy is usually among web addresses whose access can get an employee fired in many organizations. And since your mirrors may get decided automatically, a person may attempt to download software from your organization and inadvertently end up in playboy. In such a situation, your organization may be held responsible for the consequences to the employee. This is just for your information, of course. I am not a legal person, but I am a user of the eclipse project and believe it is a very good project and would hate to see it affected by such possible litigation.
Not worth the (wasted) effort to try and explain this to upper management. Although I appreciate the gesture playboys has made I think eclipse.org should drop the link.
+1. Drop playboy and get another mirror. I winced when playboy became an eclipse mirror...it seemed so tacky. Irregardless of their bandwidth donation to open source, playboy causes legal problems for people behind corporate firewalls. The corporation is also not a role model for the depiction of women as intelligent equals in society either :-)
i would not remove the mirror suggestions: -ask playboy if they can offer a different url -don't use the mirror in automatic download processes but only if the user actively chooses this mirror anyways the whole issue sounds a bit strange. -firewall restrictions may affect any mirror and the user will simply try a different mirror -getting flagged for porn surfing is resolved by a simple check to see what has been downloaded, and maybe someone in that company finally starts using a brain and removes such stupid flagging rules
(In reply to comment #3) > i would not remove the mirror > suggestions: > -ask playboy if they can offer a different url Hey that's easy... try http://mirror.plby.eclipse.org Problem solved, right? We take their generous bandwidth without being tacky and offensive! D.
+1 to drop it. Why not? Is the bandwidth really needed (enough to justify even this discussion)? plby seems so pr0n (even more tacky).
+1 for dropping the Playboy mirror. Kim and Billy summarize how I feel so there's no need for me to repeat.
In addition to what I wrote above and at the risk of offending someone... My best friend from college got sucked into Internet porn. That was five years ago. This winter he was just released from jail--he had gotten so addicted that he became a pedophile. He has become someone very different from the person I knew in college. While obviously not everyone who gets involved in porn winds up a pedophile, I am very concerned about the social implications of an organization like Eclipse becoming associated with Internet pornography.
I've pulled the mirror from the list. Thanks for all your feedback. D.
Couldn't they just use one of their other domains, like pbenterprises.com or some such?
