Description Gunnar Wagenknecht CLA 2006-02-03 12:25:35 EST
I think the EZ Front Page feed should be moved to the commercial planet once we have one or completely dropped. It's mainly an aggregator only feed with "repostings" of posts from other blogs.

I think the tips & tricks are very useful. However, I find the reposts very distracting. I think it's ok for release anouncements of new Eclipse versions. But not for every single post.

Examples:
http://www.eclipsezone.com/eclipse/forums/t63105.rhtml
repost from: http://blog.mea-culpa.net/?p=47

repost from: http://wbeaton.blogspot.com/2006/02/eclipse-installed.html

wouldn't this just move the problem to the commercial planet? And i guess some vendors don't like their news being pushed down by offtopic noise.

The problem occurs when aggregated items get reposted on other sources. In my opinion the reposter should be responsible that the item does not get aggregated again unless it contains a valuable addition.
Possible ways to achieve this:
-use some sort of flag and filter it with the planet
-repost in a location that is not aggregated by the planet

sidenote nr. 2: planeteclipse should be listed on planetplanet.org

ps. thank you for your efforts, i really like the way planeteclipse is evolving (:

I agree with comment 1 in that if EZ starts posting stuff they read from our Planet, and we syndicate their feed into our planet, that's plain wasteful - unless they add value by contributing more content.

I vote we remove EZ's feed immediately and we contact them about this. This is unwanted noise.

I removed the front page feed only. The tips & tricks feeds stays in hope that there will be real content contributed to Planet Eclipse.

CCing Rick to inform him about this issue.

Gunnar, thanks for pointing me in this direction.

I can understand the frustration if the posts were just reposts from things that had been reported on other blog entries, and especially if it has been over a longer period of time than the two examples listed below.

However, this was back in February, and there's been changes since then (not to mention the change of editorial). I don't see the front page as being an aggregation of other posts necessarily (though there are always likely to be cases where the same information gets posted and cross commented by other bloggers e.g. the Eclipse birthday parties recently).

Given the more recent content of the forums (http://www.eclipsezone.com/eclipse/forums/f18110.html and feed at http://www.eclipsezone.com/forumRSS/18110.xml) it would be useful to know if those objections are still valid?
Comment 5 Gunnar Wagenknecht CLA 2006-10-31 17:05:12 EST
Actually, if the content changed and it's not an aggregator anymore than I'm definitely open to add it back to Planet Eclipse.

I was going to add editors@eclipsezone.com as a CC to this for future reference; but it seems you can only CC addresses if there are registered accounts with that e-mail address?

It would be good if you could add it back in; I'll try and make sure that it's not simply a reposting of whatever comes out on PE. I've tried to ensure that isn't the case so far. I can't promise it will never happen, but I can promise to try that if it does, it's only the occasional thing.

Alex.

Would you like me to raise a new bug for adding this back in?

I hope this is not a new trend (see attachment)
Comment 12 Daniel Spiewak CLA 2007-01-19 16:39:11 EST
No, it's not. :-) I actually got the feed from Ian directly and posted it without remembering that both got fed to Planet Eclipse.
Comment 13 Alex Blewitt CLA 2007-01-20 03:32:18 EST
I agree with you completely Denis. We should not be doing this in general; I hope that we'll be able to demonstrate in the near future that this was a mistake and won't be happening again. I also gave Gunnar a heads-up to pre-emptively apologise.
Comment 14 Ian Skerrett CLA 2007-01-20 13:56:05 EST
You guys have been really good about this, so I for one don't see a trend.
Comment 15 Daniel Spiewak CLA 2007-01-20 14:16:23 EST
Actually, looking back over the last couple weeks, it's suprised me just how much I've done this. (posting info about RSE linking to Denis's blog, Chris's GraphicsZilla blog post, and most recently Ian's) I guess there was just a disconnect between the blog feeds I read and realizing that just about everything Eclipse related gets aggregated to PlanetEclipse - probably stemming from the fact that I've been subscribed to a lot of these feeds for much longer than I've been an editor. Oh well, live and learn.
