In a voting round the community decided about the new skin for Phoenix. The community elected Rodger Dudler's proposal. I don't see the tabs in this proposal. I don't think that they fit nicely into the skin. I tend to say they destroy the whole skin. I also don't think that the community decision was made with modifying the skin that way in mind. If tabs are a requirement for the Phoenix skin then you should request new proposals from the community.
Gunnar, I saw some tabs you had drafted up in another bug somethere. Care to submit the graphic layout here? D.
Created attachment 36519 [details] Welcome page Photoshop mockup including better looking tabs
Does anyone else agree that attachment 36519 [details] is a much cleaner, nicer home page for Eclipse? A huge download button, less clutter. From the web stats, the top-5 destinations are (excluding RSS files, that are typically fetched mecanically): 1. Home page 2. Downloads 3. Search 4. Newsgroup Portal 5. Projects This proposed home page suggests a prominent downloads link, has a search box on the front page, has links to newsgroups (although documentation/newsgroups could be a good addition) and has a short blurb about Eclipse.org being about projects. Top-5 above was compiled from Committer Tools (need to login first): https://dev.eclipse.org/committers/webstats/www.eclipse.org/usage_200603.php#TOPURLS D.
Created attachment 37415 [details] PNG version of polished Welcome page Here is the PNG version. I would really love to see at leasts the tabs included in the next version of Phoenix. If you take more out of the template it would make me even happier. ;)

There's too much whitespace beside the download button. I'm all for a prominent download button, but I'd like to see it smaller. While Eclipse SDK is a very important part of our portfolio, it's not the only thing. Why not have a "Get BIRT" button on the hopepage, or "Get ALF"? Like I said, I'm all for a cooler download button, and even an Eclipse SDK download button, but we need to make the other downloads. Maybe a "Download Eclipse SDK" button beside a "Download Eclipse Technology" button.
(In reply to comment #6) > Like I said, I'm all for a cooler download button, and even an Eclipse SDK > download button, but we need to make the other downloads. Maybe a "Download > Eclipse SDK" button beside a "Download Eclipse Technology" button. I posted this mock-up in another bug before attaching it here. The original attempt of this button is not to create a download button for the Eclipse SDK but for Callisto. Sorry for the confusion. If we try to create download buttons for every project we'll end up with a welcome page containing 60 buttons or so. This doesn't make sense.
Is there still plans in the works to get rid of the left nav bar? I think the site would look and function better if there were a second horizontal bar underneath the first when needed.

(In reply to comment #8) > I think the site would look and function better if there were a second > horizontal bar underneath the first when needed. I think this wont work because the left nav bar is complete different from the top nav bar. If you create a second nav bar below the top nav bar people might start to think that there is a relation between them. Then, what to do with the sub-nav items of the left bar? Create a 3rd horizontal nav bar?

Create a 3rd horizontal nav bar? What if we just get rid of the left nav on the home page to open more real estate. ? I think i just find that left nav of 4 default items on every page unnessecary, i will concede that i dont use the page as most of our visitors do.
RE: the download button im also hesitant to place the version of the download on the button itself, since this would require someone to recreate the image when a new version is released. Once my version of Photoshop comes in i'll cook up some nice callisto goodies for you wayne
(In reply to comment #12) > RE: the download button im also hesitant to place the version of the download > on the button itself, since this would require someone to recreate the image > when a new version is released. Honestly, the button is heavily inspired from the Firefox download buttons. But the text you see is actually not part of that image. The implementation is rather simple. It should be just a plain <a> tag with a dedicated class that uses the button as a background image. Look how Mozilla does it. <div class="home-download"> <a href="/products/download.html?product=firefox-1.5.0.1&os=win&lang=en-US" class="download-link download-firefox"> <span><strong>Download Firefox</strong> <em>1.5.0.1 for Windows, English (5.0MB)</em></span> </a> </div> <div class="download-other"> <span class="other"><a href="/firefox/all.html">Other Systems and Languages</a> - <a href="/firefox/">Learn More</a></span> </div>
Sweet, that works :)
I'm not sure how many tangents this bug has been on, but the original request was to remove tabs, not to redesign the front page. So do we remove the tabs or not? I think they look OK, and no one has really commented on them since last year. D.
old summary: Remove the tabs in Phonix RC1 At least for me I have to say that I got used to the tabs. However, I still think they can be optimized to better integrate with the theme. So I changed the summery to adapt my request.
I think that there is more that needs to be changed on the Front page then just the tabs. I think alot of the content could be streamlined to provide more information to the user of the website. My proposal is as follows. Combine the News feed and the In the news feed into one feed one the main page. What i mean by this is we would continue to maintain 2 seperate feeds for those that read them using an RSS reader. But combine the outputs on the homepage to render both into one box. Each feed item could be visually tagged to seperate the information contained therein. Secondly would be to remove the articles and events sections of the page and combine them into a brand new feed that i call "Activity" which would contain Articles, Events, Plugin News (EPIC) and other community related news items that dont fit into the mold. Lastly would be to remove the getting started box and moving the various images to the bottom of the page. I'm going to attempt to mock this layout up and post it for feedback. In the mean time can we get some feedback on the idea at least?
(In reply to comment #17) Sounds great. Looking forward to a mock-up.
