Description ajit.shenoy CLA 2005-10-27 12:30:08 EDT
After Eclipse is launched and the Eclipse IDE is active with a work-in-progress
Java program being developed, after a few minutes, the application crashes with
a General Protection Fault where it complains about javaw.exe causing an
exception.

At other times, Windows 98 either freezes while typing in the Eclipse IDE
window or freezes when the mouse is clicked. One time, the screen suddenly went
blank and the machine rebooted on its own.

This is getting to be a real pain, because of the frequent freezes or GPF
exceptions. I am not able to write more than a few lines of code without it
freezing and having to reboot. Essentially, it appears that Eclipse v3.1 with
J2RE V1.4.2 is unworkable in Windows 98. This happened on a Win98 laptop and on
a Win98 desktop.

Am I doing anything wrong? Is there anything I should be doing beyond
installing Eclipse by double-clicking on the .zip file? Are there any
configuration steps to take for Windows 98 after installation? Do I need to set
the PATH in the autoexec.bat file?

All I did to install Eclipse is double click and follow the defaults. The only
thing I changed from the default was the location of the user workspace files
where I pointed it to a different directory/folder than the one that comes up
by default. No configuration changes were made to Windows. I am wondering if
Win98 requires some specific configuration changes, such as PATH etc.

Thanks.

Windows 98 is not tested or actively support for Eclipse 3.1 - there have been
many similar reports but no conclusions about what is causing the problem.
