The "Open external file..." menu action uses '.' as shortcut... that seems
unusual. Was it intentional?
Comment 1 Dani Megert CLA 2004-11-03 13:58:51 EST
Yes, since all others were taken and '.' is valid. Why, is there a problem with '.'?
Comment 2 Rafael Chaves CLA 2004-11-03 14:02:37 EST
No, it works, is just is non-intuitive and hard to see. Maybe there are other
programs that do the same, but I don't remember seeing this before.
Comment 3 Dani Megert CLA 2004-11-03 14:04:55 EST
Kai, please decide whether you want to leave as is.
Comment 4 Kai-Uwe Maetzel CLA 2004-11-29 06:54:30 EST
If 'Refresh' would choose 'h', 'Open External File' could take 'F'.
Otherwise we let it as it is. Moving to Platform UI for comment.
Comment 5 Michael Van Meekeren CLA 2004-11-29 15:45:33 EST
If we did this then the popup menu would have to match and we would then
conflict with other items that use h. (however there are also possible
conflicts with f as well) I think it might be better to have either no mnemonic
or a duplicate one as you can cycle through them.

The question in this case is what is more popular, Refresh or Open External
File... because right now f is a strong mnemonic for Refresh and I would hate
to change that and frustrate users in the next release.

Punctuation in general can be a confusing thing - mostly because people are
not used to it. On top of that punctuation is not in the same place on every
keyboard (. is an exception - IIRC it is always on the lower keys).

It is worse in a keybinding but I would say a duplicated mnemonic is a better
idea.
Comment 7 Dani Megert CLA 2008-09-09 06:38:54 EDT
What about using 'O' as mnemonic? That would match the mnemonic used at other places for 'Open'. The only problem would be for people used to open the export wizard via 'o'.

"As per http://wiki.eclipse.org/Platform_UI/Bug_Triage_Change_2009"
Comment 9 Dani Megert CLA 2009-07-15 12:18:12 EDT
We won't change this.
