Description Paul Slauenwhite CLA 2004-08-18 13:51:32 EDT
Description in example wizard is truncated for some locales.

The description text for some NL-enabled examples does not display totally
unless the user resizes the window.

Consider enlarging the example wizard's dialog.

Please see defect #72184 (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=72184)
for the corresponding defect targeted for 3.0.2.

This is by design - we try not to make the description drive the window size.
If it is too large then we truncate. Please log a problem report to the releng
team to fix any specific translations.

Closing.

IBM TVT testers often flag this truncation of wizard page descriptions as a mustfix defect. In some cases, we've had to put hackoid workarounds in to resize the wizard so the full description is shown (e.g. see https://jazz.net/jazz/resource/itemName/com.ibm.team.workitem.WorkItem/68731)

Part of the problem is that there is no indication that the text has been truncated. While the user can resize the dialog if needed, they may not be aware that some of the text has been cut off, e.g. if it clips at the end of a phrase or sentence. If we don't want the description to drive the size of the wizard, then it should at least indicate that there is more text available, e.g. show a "...".

Setting the tooltip for the label in this case would be an option too.

Screen shot showing truncation of description in German

The attached screen shots show an example. Here the truncation was on a sentence boundary, so it was not obvious that there was more text that was hidden.

The second screen shot shows that the wizard needs to be resized 35% wider for the full translation to show (it's not uncommon for German translations to take ~30% more space). Making the wizard this much wider can make the layout seem disproportionate, however, particularly if other pages have shorter descriptions (as is common).

This does support the original decision to not size the wizard or description are larger, but there should still be some indication that more text is available (to hint at resizing), and possibly a tooltip too. Another option would be to use a scrollbar, or down arrow, but this should only be shown if needed, to keep the description area as clean as possible.

The message area in the TitleAreaDialog is handled by Bug# 16552. Its now fixed in 3.6
