After clearing the .log file and opening Eclipse numerous exceptions appeared in
the log file.  See attached.

This has been reported before. One of the data files in the workspace has become
corrupt. We have never figured out the cause of this. Please add any additional
information to bug 31729, such as whether you had crashed recently, whether you
might have been out of disk space, etc.  It is likely you will be able to
recover your workspace by just deleting the offending file (or better, rename it).
