I turned off the bracket highlighting, if that matters.
I have the code:
((IContact)element)
I place the cursor at the second character position, that is, between the first 
open bracket and the second open bracket. I double click, expecting "(IContact)
element" to be selected, but only "IContact" is selected.

Still present in build input for build 20020108. If I double click with cursor 
betwenn t and ) the "(IContact)element gets selected.
