Proposed look&feel of custom tooltip in the tree none

Description Markus Keller CLA 2004-05-03 04:04:10 EDT
I20040428

"Preferences > Workbench > Colors and Fonts" preference page has a preview field
but doesn't show previews for fonts nor for colors.

Having no preview for fonts is IIRC a regression (I think the old page had a
preview). The preview in the tree labels is not a great help, since it doesn't
show the fonts in their real size.
Comment 1 Kim Horne CLA 2004-05-03 07:50:32 EDT
Each category is responsible for generating it's own preview. It's likely that
we will not have time for 3.0 to add previewers to all categories.
Comment 2 Kim Horne CLA 2004-05-03 08:39:11 EDT
Reopening to assign to me
Comment 3 Kim Horne CLA 2004-05-03 08:39:40 EDT
Marking as later again.
Comment 4 Kim Horne CLA 2004-10-08 10:45:46 EDT
Reopening
Comment 5 Kim Horne CLA 2005-05-25 08:49:35 EDT
Given that the fonts and colors are previewed in the tree itself I think I'm going to mark this as WONTFIX.
Comment 6 Markus Keller CLA 2005-05-25 09:11:26 EDT
That's sad, since the tree labels don't show the fonts in their real size.

To really see what the font looks like (e.g. compare Banner and Header fonts),
the user has to press the 'Change...' button and look at the sample in the OS
font chooser.
Comment 7 Kim Horne CLA 2005-05-25 09:14:23 EDT
Perhaps we could fake-out a dialog in the preview area that shows off the fonts? I'm of the opinion that
what we have now is "good enough" but if you feel otherwise please reopen. It won't happen for 3.1 but
we could make an effort to add previews for all of the workbench-owned categories.

Each time I change a font, I think there should be a preview that shows the font in real size (nothing fancy, just a sample text rendered with the chosen font).

Proposed look&feel of custom tooltip in the tree

Markus, would you be happy with that kind of tooltip?
Comment 12 Markus Keller CLA 2008-05-09 12:13:26 EDT
> Markus, would you be happy with that kind of tooltip?

The content of the tooltip looks nice. Such a tooltip would be better than the current tooltip or no tooltip, but it would not fix this bug. I don't think a tooltip is a good solution here. If you want to just do a tooltip for 3.4, then please use bug 231137 for that and leave this bug open as a request for real previews in the preview area.

The contents of your tooltip in the preview area would be the perfect solution (along with a preview for colors that shows a colored 1px line, a filled rectangle, and a few words in that color -- all three on a white and on a gray background).

The preview via the display of the font category name doesn't work. The size is not correct, and for foreign language purposes, the character inventory of the preview is not informative.
Comment 15 Markus Keller CLA 2009-02-09 04:23:05 EST
Restoring severity. This slipped since 3.0, but it's still a regression, not an enhancement. There was a preview in 2.1.

OK that's fine - it was just accidentally marked as "blocker" and Boris indicated he meant to pick enhancement. "Normal" seems right.

Susan is now responsible for watching the [Themes] category.
